Mainly the balcony and the crowding. Deluxe ships tend to carry more cabins on the same hull length, so the sun deck fills early and excursion groups are larger. Refurbishment cycles are also longer — bathroom fittings and cabin carpets are usually where the age shows first.
The question worth asking before you book
Two deluxe ships at the same headline price can differ by several hundred dollars once you account for what is excluded. Entrance tickets to the Valley of the Kings, the Abu Simbel excursion, drinks with meals, and crew tipping are the four items most often left out of a deluxe quote. Ask for the total, not the nightly rate.
