Christmas and New Year are the two busiest weeks on the Nile. The ships are the same ones that sail all year, but almost everything around them changes: the price basis, the booking window, the dinner arrangements and how early the good cabins disappear.
What is different about these sailings
- Gala dinners are compulsory. Nearly every ship charges a fixed supplement for the Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve dinner, added per person on top of the cruise rate. It is not optional and not removable.
- Rates sit at their annual peak. These two weeks are priced above high season, and they do not soften as the date approaches.
- Cabins go early. The better cabin grades on the stronger ships are usually gone by late summer.
- Minimum stays appear. Some ships will only sell the longer programme across the holiday, so a three night cruise may not be offered.

The weather is the reason people come
Late December is the most comfortable time of year to be on the river. Daytime temperatures in Luxor and Aswan sit in the mid twenties Celsius, the sun deck is usable all day, and walking round Karnak or Edfu at midday is pleasant rather than punishing. Evenings are genuinely cold, so bring a warm layer; people consistently underpack for this.
It is also the busiest time at the temples. Expect crowds at Abu Simbel and the Valley of the Kings, and an early start most mornings.
Christmas or New Year?
If you only want one of them, New Year sailings are usually the livelier and the more expensive, because the gala is bigger and more ships run a full programme. Christmas week is quieter on board and slightly easier to book late. A seven night programme covering both is the most demanded product of the year and the first to close.
The quieter holiday option

When to book
For a specific ship and cabin grade, six to nine months ahead is normal. Three months out you are choosing from what is left. Inside six weeks, holiday availability is usually singles, lower deck cabins, or nothing.
Ask for the gala supplement in writing at quote stage. It is the single most common surprise on a holiday-week Nile cruise invoice, because it is often quoted separately from the cruise rate.

How cold does it get in the evening?
Cold enough for a jacket. Luxor and Aswan can drop sharply after sunset in late December while the daytime stays warm and sunny.
Do the ships decorate for Christmas?
Most do, and larger ships run a holiday entertainment programme alongside the gala dinner. The style varies a lot between fleets.
Can I still book six weeks before Christmas?
