Aswan to Luxor Nile Cruise

The Aswan to Luxor sailing is the northbound Nile cruise, usually four days and three nights. It is the shorter of the two standard routes, and it suits travellers who are tight on time or who are joining the Nile after something else in Egypt.

Day by day

Day 1: Board in Aswan. Embarkation around midday. The afternoon usually covers Philae Temple and the High Dam. Some itineraries add the Unfinished Obelisk.

Day 2: Kom Ombo, then sail. The ship moves north to Kom Ombo Temple, which is a short walk from the mooring. Afternoon sailing toward Edfu.

Day 3: Edfu, then Luxor. An early visit to Edfu Temple by horse carriage, then a long stretch of sailing north, passing through the Esna lock, arriving in Luxor in the evening.

Day 4: Luxor and disembark. Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple, or the West Bank, depending on the operator. Disembarkation is usually mid-morning, which means Luxor sightseeing is often compressed or moved to a post-cruise extension.

The honest trade-off

This route is cheaper and shorter, and it is a genuinely good option if your time is limited. But be clear about what you are giving up: Luxor holds the densest sightseeing on the Nile, and on a three-night northbound sailing you arrive there at the very end, with the least time and the most travel fatigue.

If Luxor matters most to you, either book the five-night southbound Luxor to Aswan route, or plan an extra night in a Luxor hotel after you disembark.

Who this route suits well

  • Travellers who have already seen Luxor on a previous trip.
  • Anyone combining the cruise with Abu Simbel, since you start in Aswan.
  • Shorter Egypt itineraries where the Nile is one component rather than the centrepiece.
  • Budget-conscious travellers, since three nights costs meaningfully less than four.

Practical notes

Northbound sailing works against the current, so engine noise can be slightly more noticeable, particularly in lower-deck cabins near the stern. If you are a light sleeper, ask for a mid-ship cabin on an upper deck — our cabin guide explains the deck layout.

The Esna lock can involve waiting time depending on traffic. It is not a problem, but it is worth knowing that sailing schedules on day three sometimes shift by a few hours.

What to confirm before booking

  • Exactly what Luxor sightseeing is included on the final morning, and whether it happens before or after disembarkation.
  • Whether the ship overnights in Luxor, which gives you an evening at Luxor Temple.
  • Whether entrance tickets and the Abu Simbel excursion are included.
  • Departure day and time, since northbound schedules vary more between operators.
