Day by day

Day 1: Board in Aswan. Embarkation around midday. The afternoon usually covers Philae Temple and the High Dam. Some itineraries add the Unfinished Obelisk.

Day 2: Kom Ombo, then sail. The ship moves north to Kom Ombo Temple, which is a short walk from the mooring. Afternoon sailing toward Edfu.

Day 3: Edfu, then Luxor. An early visit to Edfu Temple by horse carriage, then a long stretch of sailing north, passing through the Esna lock, arriving in Luxor in the evening.

Day 4: Luxor and disembark. Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple, or the West Bank, depending on the operator. Disembarkation is usually mid-morning, which means Luxor sightseeing is often compressed or moved to a post-cruise extension.

The honest trade-off

This route is cheaper and shorter, and it is a genuinely good option if your time is limited. But be clear about what you are giving up: Luxor holds the densest sightseeing on the Nile, and on a three-night northbound sailing you arrive there at the very end, with the least time and the most travel fatigue.

The Esna lock can involve waiting time depending on traffic. It is not a problem, but it is worth knowing that sailing schedules on day three sometimes shift by a few hours.
