Weather by Season

October to April (high season): The most comfortable time to sightsee. Daytime temperatures are generally mild to warm, and evenings can be cool, especially December and January — pack a light jacket. This is peak demand, and prices and ship availability reflect that.

May, September, October (shoulder season): Warm and transitional. Fewer crowds than peak winter, with weather that’s still manageable for full days of temple sightseeing, particularly if you plan around early mornings.

June to August (low season): Egypt’s hottest stretch. In Aswan, daytime highs regularly reach 42°C (108°F) in the peak of summer, dropping to a more bearable (but still hot) 29°C (84°F) at night. Luxor runs similarly hot, if slightly less extreme. This is the cheapest time to cruise, and ships are noticeably less crowded, but touring is demanding — plan around early mornings and evenings, stay hydrated, and expect indoor/shaded breaks during midday.

Winter (December–February): The coolest, most comfortable months for sightseeing, with Aswan daytime highs around 24–26°C (75–79°F) and cooler nights near 11°C (52°F). This is also when Christmas, New Year, and (depending on the year) Easter peak pricing applies.

Egypt has no bad month for a Nile cruise, only different trade-offs between heat, crowds and cost. Here is how the year actually breaks down.

October to November

Arguably the best window. Daytime temperatures in Luxor settle into the high twenties and low thirties Celsius, evenings are pleasant, and the summer crowds have gone while the Christmas surge has not arrived.

Prices are high season but not peak. If you want one recommendation, November is it.

December to January

Coolest weather of the year, and the busiest. Days are comfortable for walking around the Valley of the Kings, but evenings on deck get genuinely chilly and you will want a jacket.

Christmas and New Year carry the highest prices of the year, often 30 percent above normal high season. Temples are crowded.

February to March

Warm, clear, and slightly quieter than midwinter. March in particular is excellent: comfortable heat, long daylight, and prices easing off peak.

April to May

April is pleasant and still busy around Easter, which carries a price premium. May marks the turn: temperatures climb past the mid-thirties and the West Bank starts to feel demanding by late morning.

Rates begin to drop noticeably in May, which makes it good value if you tolerate heat well.

June to August

Hot. Luxor regularly exceeds forty degrees, and the Valley of the Kings is enclosed rock that traps heat with no shade.

What you get in return is real: the lowest prices of the year, and temples that are genuinely quiet. Ships are fully air-conditioned, excursions start at dawn, and afternoons are spent on board.

Summer works if you accept early starts, drink far more water than feels necessary, and treat the middle of the day as rest time.

September

Still hot but easing, and prices remain low into early September before high season resumes. A good compromise month.

Choosing by priority
