Luxor to Aswan Nile Cruise

The Luxor to Aswan sailing is the standard southbound Nile cruise, normally five days and four nights. It is the direction most first-time visitors take, and there is a practical reason for that: you start with the biggest sites while you are fresh, and the trip winds down gently in Aswan.

Day by day, what actually happens

Day 1: Board in Luxor, East Bank. Embarkation is usually early afternoon. The first excursion is Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple. Karnak takes around two hours and is the largest religious complex you will see on the trip.

Day 2: West Bank, then sail. An early start, often around 6am, for the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple and the Colossi of Memnon. The ship usually sails after lunch, and this first afternoon of movement is when most people finally relax.

Day 3: Edfu and Kom Ombo. The longest sightseeing day. Edfu Temple in the morning, reached by horse carriage, then Kom Ombo Temple in the late afternoon, which sits right beside the mooring.

Day 4: Aswan. Philae Temple, the High Dam, and usually the Unfinished Obelisk. Afternoons are often free, or used for a felucca sail around Elephantine Island.

Day 5: Disembark. Breakfast, then off by around 8am. If you are adding Abu Simbel, it normally happens as a very early excursion on this day or the day before.

Why sail south rather than north

Three arguments favour the Luxor start:

Sightseeing load is front-loaded. Luxor holds the heaviest two days. Doing them first means you tackle them before cumulative tiredness sets in.
It ends near Abu Simbel. Finishing in Aswan puts you in the right place for the Abu Simbel excursion without backtracking.
Aswan is a calmer finish. The town is smaller and slower than Luxor, which suits the end of a trip.

The counter-argument is simple: southbound sailings are more popular, so they can cost slightly more and sell out earlier in high season. If your trip ends in Cairo, the northbound Aswan to Luxor route may suit your flights better.

Four nights or three

The Luxor to Aswan route is normally sold as four nights. The three-night version usually runs the opposite way, Aswan to Luxor. If you want the southbound direction specifically, expect to book four nights.

What to confirm before you book

The ship name, not just the category. Deluxe means different things across operators.
Whether temple entrance tickets are included or paid locally.
Whether Abu Simbel is included, optional, or not offered.
Cabin deck and window type. Lower decks have smaller windows set higher in the cabin.
Guide language, and whether the guide is private or shared.

Best months to sail

October to April is comfortable. December and January are peak, and prices reflect that. May and September are hot but manageable, and noticeably cheaper.
