Why go north of Luxor?
Because two of Egypt's finest temples are there and most visitors never see them. Both keep much of their colour and are far quieter than Karnak.
What is at Abydos?
The Temple of Seti I, with delicate reliefs and the Abydos King List, and the Osireion behind it.
What is at Dendera?
The Temple of Hathor, with Hathor-headed columns, a painted ceiling, rooftop chapels, a cast of the zodiac and a relief of Cleopatra.
