How far is Alexandria from Cairo?
Around three hours by road each way. It is a long day, but you still get five or six hours in the city.
What will you see?
The Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, Pompey's Pillar and the Serapeum, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and the Citadel of Qaitbay on the site of the ancient Pharos lighthouse.
Why go?
Alexandria is Greek and Roman Egypt rather than Pharaonic Egypt, so it shows a side of the country that Cairo and a Nile cruise do not.
