A Nile cruise is one of the few trips where the transport is the accommodation and the sightseeing is arranged around it. That structure makes it easy to book badly, because the differences between options are not obvious from a listing page. This guide covers the four decisions that actually matter.
Decision one: direction
There are two standard routes. Luxor to Aswan runs southbound and is normally four nights. Aswan to Luxor runs northbound and is normally three nights.
Southbound puts the heaviest sightseeing at the start, while you are fresh, and finishes in Aswan near the Abu Simbel excursion. Northbound is shorter and cheaper but compresses Luxor into your final morning. For a first visit, southbound is usually the better choice.
Decision two: how many nights
Three and four nights cover the same temples. The extra night buys pace rather than content: a full second day in Luxor, and a proper sailing afternoon in the middle of the trip.
Longer sailings exist. Seven-night itineraries add Dendera and Abydos, and Lake Nasser cruises between Aswan and Abu Simbel are an entirely separate route with Nubian temples that Nile ships never reach.
Decision three: ship category
- Standard. Clean private cabins with bathrooms and air conditioning. Simple food. The temples are identical to every other category.
- Deluxe. Larger cabins, better food, more attentive service. The best value bracket for most travellers.
- Luxury. Suites, balconies on some ships, higher staff ratios, spa facilities.
- Dahabiya. Small sailing boats, typically eight to twelve cabins. Slower, quieter, and able to moor at villages large ships cannot reach.
Category affects comfort, not sightseeing. Everyone visits the same temples.
Decision four: when to sail
October to April is the comfortable season. December and January are peak in both crowds and price. May and September are hot but noticeably cheaper. June to August is genuinely demanding at the Valley of the Kings, though ships are air-conditioned and rates drop sharply.
What a fair quote includes
Ask for these in writing before paying:
- Ship name and exact sailing date, not just a category
- Cabin deck and window type
- Full board, and which drinks are covered
- Which temple entrance tickets are included
- Whether the guide is private or shared
- Transfers between airport, hotel and ship
- Whether Abu Simbel is included, optional or excluded
- Cancellation terms and payment schedule
A quote that says only deluxe cruise, four nights, from a price is not a quote. It is an advertisement.
