Cairo and Nile Cruise Package

Cairo and a Nile cruise are the two halves of a first Egypt trip. Combining them is straightforward, but the sequencing and the transport between them are where itineraries go wrong.

How many days you need

Eight days is the practical minimum for a comfortable combination: two full days in Cairo, four nights on the river, and travel time between them. Ten days lets you add Abu Simbel or Alexandria without rushing.

Anything under seven days means cutting Cairo to a single day, which is tight for the Giza Pyramids and the Egyptian Museum together.

Cairo first or last?

Cairo first works better for most people. You arrive into the main international airport, adjust to the time difference in a city hotel, and then move to the river once you have found your feet.

Ending in Cairo has one advantage: shopping and a straightforward airport departure. If you finish your cruise in Aswan, you would fly back to Cairo for the final night.

Getting between Cairo and Luxor or Aswan

  • Domestic flight. About an hour to Luxor or Aswan. The standard choice, and worth the cost for the time saved.
  • Sleeper train. Around ten hours overnight, in a private cabin. Cheaper, saves a hotel night, and some travellers enjoy it. Comfort is basic and punctuality varies.
  • Driving. Not recommended. It is a long journey with no real advantage.

What two days in Cairo should cover

Day one: The Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple in the morning, when light is best and heat is lower. The Egyptian Museum in the afternoon.

Day two: Old Cairo and the Coptic quarter, the Citadel with the Mohamed Ali Mosque, and Khan El Khalili bazaar in the late afternoon.

If you have a third day, add Saqqara and Dahshur for the Step Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid, which are far quieter than Giza.

Which cruise direction to pair with Cairo

If you fly Cairo to Luxor, take the southbound Luxor to Aswan cruise and fly home from Aswan via Cairo. This also puts you in Aswan for an Abu Simbel excursion.

If you would rather end in Luxor, fly Cairo to Aswan and sail north.

What to confirm in a package quote

  • Whether internal flights are included or booked separately
  • Cairo hotel category and location
  • Which Cairo entrance tickets are covered, especially inside the pyramids
  • All airport, hotel and ship transfers
  • Whether Abu Simbel is included
