Hurghada is a Red Sea beach resort with no river access, so a Nile cruise from Hurghada always means travelling inland first. The good news is that Luxor is closer than most visitors assume.
The distances involved
Hurghada to Luxor is roughly 300 kilometres by road, around four hours through desert. Hurghada to Aswan is considerably further, closer to seven hours, so almost everyone joins a cruise at Luxor.
There are also short domestic flights, though schedules are limited and the drive is often simpler.
Option one: a proper cruise
Transfer to Luxor, board a four-night southbound sailing to Aswan, then fly or transfer back. Allow six days total including travel at both ends.
This is the option that actually delivers the Nile experience: Karnak Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu Temple, Kom Ombo Temple and Philae Temple, with nights on the river between them.
Option two: a shorter three-night sailing
Transfer to Aswan by air, sail north to Luxor over three nights, then transfer back to Hurghada by road. Slightly tighter, and it puts the long road journey at the end when you are already tired.
Option three: the Luxor day trip
Many Hurghada hotels sell a one-day Luxor excursion. It leaves around 4am, covers the Valley of the Kings and Karnak Temple, and returns late in the evening.
Be realistic about what this is: roughly eight hours in a vehicle for about five hours of sightseeing. You will see two major sites and nothing of the river itself. It is better than missing Luxor entirely, but it is not a Nile cruise.
Which to choose
- Two weeks in Hurghada? Take the four-night cruise. You will barely miss the beach time.
- One week? A three-night sailing still works if you accept two travel days.
- Only a few days left? The day trip is the honest fallback.
Practical notes
Road transfers between Hurghada and Luxor are routine and run daily. Ask whether your transfer is private or a shared coach, since shared services make multiple hotel pickups and take longer.
Confirm what happens to your Hurghada hotel room while you are away. Some resorts will hold it, others expect you to check out and rebook, which affects the cost of the whole plan.
