Nile Cruise and Abu Simbel

Nile cruise and Abu Simbel plans add one of Egypt’s most memorable temple excursions to an Aswan cruise itinerary. It works best before or after the cruise, depending on flight times and final sailing schedule.

Adding Abu Simbel to a Nile cruise

Abu Simbel sits 280km south of Aswan, near the Sudanese border. It is not on any Nile cruise route — every ship stops at Aswan — so it is always an add-on, and how you add it changes the day substantially.

The three ways to get there

  • Road convoy from Aswan. Departs around 3–4am, roughly three hours each way, back by early afternoon. Cheapest, and a genuinely long day.
  • Short flight from Aswan. About 45 minutes each way with roughly two hours at the site. Costs more, saves six hours of desert road.
  • Lake Nasser cruise. Arrive by water and moor overnight. The most expensive route and by a distance the best experience.

What you are going to see

Two temples cut into a cliff by Ramses II, both sawn into blocks and moved 65 metres uphill in the 1960s to escape the rising lake. The relocation is visible if you know where to look, and it is part of what makes the site remarkable. Twice a year, in February and October, sunrise reaches the inner sanctuary — those dates book out far in advance.
