A Nile cruise suits a honeymoon for a simple reason: the logistics are handled, so the two of you are not navigating transfers and ticket queues. The decisions that matter are the boat, the cabin and the extras.
Luxury ship or Dahabiya?
This is the central choice.
A luxury motorship gives you space, a pool, a spa on some vessels, a la carte dining and reliable timing. Suites are larger and a few ships offer genuine private balconies. Best if you want comfort and facilities.
A Dahabiya gives you a dozen guests instead of two hundred, moorings at quiet sandbanks, dinners cooked for the group rather than assembled on a buffet, and no crowds at all. Best if privacy matters more than facilities. Some couples charter a whole boat, which is more affordable than it sounds out of season.
The cabin
Request an upper deck, mid-ship. Upper decks have larger windows and better views. Mid-ship is furthest from engine noise, which carries into stern cabins on sailing nights.
If a balcony is available and the budget stretches, it is the upgrade most couples say they would repeat, since much of the pleasure is watching the bank pass.
Romantic extras worth arranging in advance
- A private felucca sail in Aswan at sunset. Inexpensive and consistently the most-remembered hour of the trip.
- A private candlelit dinner on deck. Most ships arrange this on request, but ask before you sail rather than on the night.
- A sunrise hot air balloon over the Luxor West Bank. Early and worth it.
- A private guide, so you tour at your own pace rather than in a group of thirty.
Mention that it is your honeymoon when booking. Ships frequently arrange a decorated cabin, flowers or a cake at no cost, but only if they know.
Timing
October, November and March are the comfortable months with clear skies. Avoid Christmas and New Year unless you want the festive atmosphere, since crowds and prices peak.
How to structure the trip
Two nights in Cairo for the Giza Pyramids, then fly to Luxor for a four-night southbound cruise to Aswan, then either add Abu Simbel or fly to the Red Sea for beach days. Temples first, relaxation second, works better than the reverse.
