How to Read a Nile Cruise Quote: What to Check Before You Pay

How to Read a Nile Cruise Quote: What to Check Before You Pay

How do you know if a Nile cruise quote is a good deal? You check what is actually in it, line by line, before you compare the price. Two quotes for “a 4-night Nile cruise” can describe completely different trips: a different ship, a different cabin, different sightseeing, and very different extra costs once you arrive. The cheapest quote is often the one that leaves the most out.

This guide goes through every line you should find in a proper Nile cruise quote, what each one means, the questions to ask when something is missing, and the red flags that tell you to walk away. Keep it open next to the quotes you are comparing.

Why Nile cruise quotes are so hard to compare

There are dozens of ships on the Nile, from simple standard boats to luxury ships and small dahabiyas. They sail in two directions, on different days, for three, four or seven nights. Some prices include sightseeing and entrance tickets; others include only the cabin and meals. Some include airport transfers and domestic flights; others assume you will arrange them. And many agents sell the same ship at different prices with different inclusions.

So the only fair comparison is item by item. Here is what to look for.

1. The ship

Is the ship named?

A good quote names the exact ship. Be careful with phrases like “a 5-star ship”, “deluxe class” or “Ship X or similar”. “Or similar” lets the seller swap you onto a different ship, sometimes a lower standard, without breaking the agreement. If you see it, ask for the named ship to be confirmed in writing, or for a list of the ships it could be.

Do the star ratings mean anything?

Not much on their own. Star ratings on the Nile are applied loosely, and two “5-star” ships can be very different. What matters is the ship’s actual age, refurbishment date, cabin size, facilities and reputation. Ask, and look at recent independent reviews. Our Nile cruise cabin guide explains what to check.

Have you seen real photos?

Ask for photos of the exact cabin category you are being quoted, not just the sun deck. Marketing photos are often years old, so check reviews from recent travellers too.

2. The cabin

Which cabin category?

Most ships have several cabin categories: standard cabins, sometimes on a lower deck, and suites or upper-deck cabins. The price difference can be large. Your quote should name the category, not just “double cabin”.

Which deck?

Lower decks can have smaller windows, more engine noise and less view, especially when ships moor side by side. Ask which deck the category is on. If it matters to you, ask whether you can request a higher deck.

Balcony or window?

A “balcony” on some ships is a full private balcony; on others it is a French balcony, a sliding glass door with a rail. Ask which. And remember that ships often moor several abreast in Luxor and Aswan, so for part of the trip your window may face the side of the next ship whatever you book.

Bed type and occupancy

Check whether the cabin has a double bed or twin beds, and whether it can take a third person or a child. Triple cabins are not available on every ship.

3. The dates, nights and direction

How many nights, really?

Cruises are sold as “4 days, 3 nights”, “5 days, 4 nights” or “8 days, 7 nights”. The first and last days are partial: you usually board around lunchtime and leave after breakfast. So a “5-day” cruise is four nights on board with three full days. Compare quotes by nights, not days.

Which direction?

Luxor to Aswan cruises usually run four nights; Aswan to Luxor cruises usually run three. The sites are mostly the same, but the order, pace and time in each city differ. Our guides to choosing the right Nile cruise explain the trade-off.

Embarkation and disembarkation times

Find out what time you can board and what time you must leave the ship on the last day. This decides which flights you can take. A cheap early-morning flight is no use if you cannot board until lunchtime.

Is the date confirmed?

Each ship sails on set days of the week. Make sure the date on the quote is a real departure day for that ship, and that the cabin is actually available, not just priced.

4. Meals and drinks

Full board or all inclusive?

Most Nile cruises are sold full board: breakfast, lunch and dinner on board, usually as a buffet, with afternoon tea on many ships. Drinks are normally extra. Some ships and agents offer all inclusive, which adds drinks, but what “all inclusive” covers varies a lot. It may mean soft drinks and local beer only, or it may include wine with meals. Ask for the exact list.

What about water?

Some ships provide bottled water in the cabin daily; others charge for it. It is a small cost, but it adds up in the heat. Ask.

Special diets

If you need vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or allergy-safe meals, ask the agent to confirm in writing that the ship has been told. Read what meals are actually like on board, and our guide to the alcohol policy on Nile cruises if drinks matter to you.

Gala dinners and festive surcharges

Over Christmas and New Year, many ships hold a compulsory gala dinner with a separate charge. If you are travelling then, check whether it is included in the quote or added later.

5. Sightseeing and entrance tickets

This is where quotes differ most, and where the biggest surprises hide.

Is sightseeing included at all?

Some quotes are “cruise only”: cabin and meals, with no excursions. Others include the full programme. Ask for a list of every site included.

Which sites, exactly?

A standard Luxor to Aswan programme usually includes Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut, the Colossi of Memnon, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Philae, the High Dam and often the Unfinished Obelisk. If a quote is cheaper, check whether some of these are missing.

Are entrance tickets included?

“Sightseeing included” does not always mean the tickets are paid. Some quotes include the guide and the transport but not the entrance fees, which can add a significant amount per person. Ask the direct question: “Are all entrance tickets for the listed sites included?”

What is never included?

Even with tickets included, some things are almost always extra: special tombs in the Valley of the Kings such as Tutankhamun, Seti I or Ramesses VI; the tomb of Nefertari; entry inside the Great Pyramid; and photography tickets where they apply. That is normal, but you should know.

Shared or private guide?

On most cruises, sightseeing is in groups with a shared Egyptologist guide from the ship. Some quotes include a private guide. Both are fine, but they are not the same product, and the price should reflect it.

6. Optional excursions

The most popular extras on a Nile cruise are Abu Simbel from Aswan, the sunrise balloon in Luxor, and the sound and light shows at Karnak and Philae. Ships and agents often sell these on board. They are rarely in the base price.

  • Ask for the price of each optional extra before you book, so you can compare total costs.
  • Ask whether they can be booked in advance, especially Abu Simbel around 22 February and 22 October, and the balloon in winter.
  • Ask what is included in each: tickets, transport, guide.

We cover how to decide in Is a Luxor balloon ride worth it? and Should you book Egypt day tours in advance?

7. Transfers, flights and nights off the ship

Are transfers included?

You need to get from the airport or train station to the ship and back. Some quotes include private transfers; some include shared ones; some include nothing. If you arrive at night or with luggage, this matters.

Are domestic flights included?

If you are flying from Cairo to Luxor or Aswan, check whether the flights are in the quote, which airline, and how much baggage is allowed. Domestic baggage allowances can be lower than international ones.

Cairo nights and hotels

Package quotes often add Cairo nights before or after the cruise. Check the named hotel, the room type, whether breakfast is included, and which Cairo sightseeing is included. Our guide to Cairo before or after a Nile cruise helps you decide how many nights you need.

8. The extra costs that are rarely in the price

Tips

Tipping is expected in Egypt. On cruises, there is usually a crew tip collected at the end of the trip and a separate tip for your guide. Some agents include a tipping package; most do not. Ask what amount is customary for your ship so you can budget for it.

Visa

Your Egypt visa is almost never in a cruise quote. Budget for it separately.

Service charges and taxes

Check that the price includes all taxes and service charges, and is not “plus service”.

Card fees and currency

Find out which currency the quote is in, whether card payments carry a fee, and whether the final price could change with exchange rates.

9. How the price is expressed

Per person or per cabin?

Most Nile cruise prices are quoted per person, sharing a double or twin cabin. A quote that looks cheap may be per person while another is per cabin. Always convert both to the same basis before comparing.

Single supplement

Travelling alone? Single travellers usually pay a supplement for a cabin to themselves, and single cabins are limited. Ask for the single price, not the per-person sharing price. Our guide to solo travel on a Nile cruise explains more.

Child prices

Children’s prices depend on age and on whether they share a cabin with adults. Check the exact age bands and whether the child price applies to the cruise, the flights and the entrance tickets.

Season

Prices change by season, with the highest rates around Christmas, New Year and Easter. Make sure your quote is for your actual dates and not a generic “from” price.

Is the quote valid?

Quotes usually have an expiry date, because availability and flight prices change. Note it, and ask for an update if it lapses.

10. Payment, cancellation and changes

Deposit and balance

A normal arrangement is a deposit to secure the booking and the balance some weeks before departure. Check how much, when, and how. Be careful with anyone who asks for full payment immediately, long before travel, without a clear reason.

Cancellation terms

Ask for the cancellation policy in writing: what you lose if you cancel 60, 30 or 7 days before. Then make sure your travel insurance covers the gap.

What happens if the itinerary changes?

Nile cruises sometimes change their order or timing because of water levels, the Esna lock or local rules. A good quote explains what happens in that case. Read why Nile cruises get delayed, rescheduled or cancelled so you know what is normal.

Can you change your dates?

Ask whether you can move your dates, and whether there is a fee. Flexibility is worth paying a little extra for if your plans are not fixed.

11. Who you are booking with

Is the company real and contactable?

Check that the seller has a real company name, a physical address, a working phone number and an email address on its own domain. In Egypt, travel companies selling tourism services are licensed by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities; you can ask for the licence details.

How do they want to be paid?

Be cautious if you are asked to pay only by a transfer to a personal account, by money transfer services, or in cash in advance. Secure card payment or a bank transfer to a company account is normal. Our guide on how to avoid a bad Nile cruise booking covers this in more detail.

Who do you call in Egypt?

Ask who your contact is once you arrive, and how to reach them, ideally on WhatsApp. If something goes wrong on a Sunday evening in Aswan, an email address in another country will not help.

Red flags: walk away if you see these

  • No ship name, or only “5-star ship or similar”.
  • A price far below every other quote for the same ship and dates.
  • No written list of inclusions and exclusions.
  • Pressure to pay today “or the price will go up”.
  • Payment only to a personal account.
  • No cancellation policy, or one that refuses to put it in writing.
  • No contact in Egypt.

The 30-second quote checklist

Before you compare prices, make sure every quote answers these questions:

  • Which ship, exactly, and which cabin category and deck?
  • How many nights, which direction, and what are the boarding and leaving times?
  • Full board or all inclusive, and what drinks are included?
  • Which sites are included, and are all entrance tickets paid?
  • Shared or private guide?
  • Which optional excursions are extra, and how much are they?
  • Are transfers, domestic flights and Cairo hotels included?
  • Are tips, visa, taxes and gala dinners included?
  • Is the price per person or per cabin, and for my exact dates?
  • What are the deposit, balance and cancellation terms?
  • Who is my contact in Egypt?

If a quote cannot answer all of these, ask. If the seller will not answer, that tells you something too.

How to compare two quotes fairly

Here is a simple method. It turns two very different-looking quotes into numbers you can actually compare.

  • Step 1: convert both to the same basis: per person, sharing, for the same dates and the same number of nights.
  • Step 2: list every item on our checklist down the side of a page, with one column per quote.
  • Step 3: for every item one quote includes and the other does not, write in what it would cost you to add it: tickets, transfers, a domestic flight, Abu Simbel, drinks.
  • Step 4: add those extras to the cheaper quote’s price.
  • Step 5: now compare. Then compare the ship and the cabin, because the same total can still buy a very different trip.

A typical pattern, as an illustration: Quote A looks noticeably cheaper than Quote B. But Quote A does not include entrance tickets, airport transfers, or the flight from Cairo, and names “a 5-star ship or similar”. Quote B names the ship, includes all three, and has a clear cancellation policy. Once you add the missing items to Quote A, the gap often shrinks to very little, or reverses, and Quote B is the safer booking. That is why the headline price is the last thing to compare, not the first.

Get a quote that answers every question

We write our quotes to pass this checklist. Every Nile Cruise Hub quote names the ship and the cabin category, lists exactly which sites and tickets are included, separates the optional extras with their own prices, and sets out the payment and cancellation terms in writing. If something is not included, we say so before you book, not after you board.
