Can You Do a Day Trip from Hurghada to Luxor?

Can You Do a Day Trip from Hurghada to Luxor?

Yes, and thousands of people do it every year. Luxor is around four hours by road from Hurghada, so a long day lets you see the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and Karnak and be back at your hotel that night. It is tiring, though, and it is not the only way to do it.

How long is the day?

Plan on 12 to 14 hours door to door. Pickup is usually very early, before dawn, so that you reach Luxor in the morning. You drive across the Eastern Desert, spend the middle of the day on both banks, and drive back in the evening.

What do you see?

  • The Valley of the Kings, with a standard ticket covering a set of royal tombs. Tutankhamun’s tomb needs an extra ticket.
  • The Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari.
  • A quick stop at the Colossi of Memnon.
  • The Karnak temple complex.

That is the core of Luxor. Luxor Temple, the quieter West Bank sites and the balloon all need more time.

Is it worth it?

If you are on a beach holiday and this is your only chance to see ancient Egypt, yes. The sites are extraordinary, and a private car with your own guide makes the long drive far easier than a crowded coach.

If you have more time, there are better options:

  • Add a night in Luxor. The day becomes relaxed, and you can add Luxor Temple at night and the balloon at dawn.
  • Take a short Nile cruise. Three or four nights between Luxor and Aswan covers far more, with no long drives. Read how to add Luxor and Aswan from Hurghada.

Private car or coach?

Big shared coaches are the cheapest option, but they often travel in large groups, stop at shops, and spend less time at the sites. A private car leaves when you are ready, goes at your pace and gives you your own Egyptologist guide. For a day this long, that difference matters.

Can I do it from a cruise ship at Safaga?

Yes. Safaga port is a little closer to Luxor than Hurghada. The plan has to be built around your ship’s arrival and all-aboard times, with a safety margin. Send us your ship name and port times and we will confirm the timing in writing.

What should I bring?

  • Sun protection and a hat: the West Bank has very little shade.
  • Comfortable shoes for the tombs and temples.
  • Cash for extra tomb tickets, drinks and tips.
  • A packed breakfast: ask your hotel the day before.

What about Cairo from Hurghada?

Cairo is much further by road, so fly. A same-day return flight gives you the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. See our Hurghada to Cairo day tour by plane.

Ready to go? Our Hurghada to Luxor Day Tour includes a private car, an Egyptologist guide in Luxor and pickup from your hotel or Safaga port, quoted on request. If you would rather stay in Luxor, see both banks of Luxor in one day.
