Standard, deluxe and luxury: what actually differs

The three categories differ less than the price gap suggests, because the most valuable part of a Nile cruise, the temples, is identical across all of them. Here is what your money actually buys.

What stays the same at every level

Every ship on the classic route visits Karnak Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu Temple, Kom Ombo Temple and Philae Temple. The moorings are shared. The sailing schedule is set by lock traffic. Every category includes full board and guided excursions.

Nobody gets earlier access or private viewings. A budget passenger and a luxury passenger stand in the same tomb.

Standard

Cabins around 15 square metres, private bathroom, air conditioning, a window rather than a balcony. Buffet meals with limited variety. Functional public areas and usually a small pool.

This works if you will be off the ship most daylight hours and the cabin is somewhere to sleep. It is a real cruise, not a compromised one.

Deluxe

Cabins around 18 to 22 square metres, better bedding and bathrooms, more varied buffets with some cooked-to-order options, and noticeably better service.

For most travellers this is the value sweet spot. The step up from standard is clearly felt. The step up to luxury is more incremental.

Luxury

Suites from 25 square metres upward, sometimes with private balconies. Higher crew ratios, a la carte dining, spa facilities, and smaller guided groups.

The guiding difference matters more than most people expect. Hearing your Egyptologist clearly inside a crowded tomb is worth real money.

Which upgrades are actually worth paying for

• Cabin deck over cabin category. An upper-deck standard cabin often beats a lower-deck deluxe for light and view.
• Mid-ship position. Quieter than the stern, where engine noise carries.
• Smaller guided groups. Ask the number before you ask about the spa.
• Nights over stars. Four nights on a deluxe ship generally beats three nights on a luxury one.

A simple way to decide

Set your total budget, then spend it in this order: enough nights first, then cabin position, then category, then extras like Abu Simbel. Most regret comes from booking a short trip on a beautiful ship rather than a proper trip on a comfortable one.
